International Workshop on the Futures of Care in Denmark, Israel, and Japan - Creation Through Technology, Art, and Culture
The rapid advancement of modern science and technology is transforming our living environments and relationships in diverse and accelerating ways. Even in areas of strength for Yamanashi Prefectural University (YPU)—nursing, welfare, caregiving, childcare, and education—AI, avatars, and robots are now entering the scenes. We have entered an era where humans coexist and collaborate with these new entities. This international workshop, themed “The Future of Care,” will discuss approaches based on practices and research from YPU and around the world. Furthermore, we will explore multifaceted ways to engage with future science and technology, while also paying attention to backgrounds across different linguistic and cultural spheres.
Date and Time: Monday, March 16, 13:30-18:00 (Venue opens at 13:10)
Location: Yamanashi Prefectural University, Iida Campus (5-11-1, Iida, Kofu, Yamanashi)
Venue: Room B120
Conference format: Hybrid (in-person on-site preferred and online)
- Online participation may be limited to sessions starting at 16:30.
- Online registrants will receive a Zoom link via email by the day before the workshop.
Language used: English
[Purpose of this workshop]
This workshop will be held to collaboratively formulate, explore, and discuss questions about diverse ways of caring for one another, including but not limited to the following:
1. How and why can we care for one another, and how might technology and art be involved?
- What is the Other (Autrui)? And what does it mean to form caring relationships with media technologies such as robots and avatars?
2. How can cultural contexts influence approaches to care and perceptions of technology?
- How should we consider our relationships with technologies that might relate to, e.g., religion or customs, such as griefbots?
3. Who/what will care for whom/what, now and in the future, and what values should be protected and nurtured?
- How should we rethink the dichotomies of human and machine, living and non-living, life and death in relation to technology and the art of living?
